Infrared Receiver Stick + Remote Kit

Control your project remotely with this infrared receiver and matching 21 button remote.

This compact receiver detects infrared signals (like the ones zapped out by the included remote) and converts them into simple digital signals that can be read by any microcontroller with a spare GPIO pin. This makes it easy to switch effects, adjust settings, or trigger actions at the press of a button.

We've written a nice MicroPython library that's compatible with any Pico/RP2040/RP2350 project. It supports advanced features like long presses and it has all the button codes for our remote built in so you don't need to figure them out yourself (scroll down for a handy cheat sheet!)

It works great with Tiny FX - our tiny lights-n-sound controller for models, dioramas and brick-based constructions.

Kit contains

  • IR Receiver Stick
  • 3-Pin JST-SH cable (150mm, approx)
  • 21 button IR remote (includes CR2025 battery)

IR Receiver Stick comes with a cable that will let you plug it straight in to the three pin connector on Tiny FX. If you're planning on using it with another microcontroller, you'll probably want to pick up a JST-SH to DuPont cable to connect it up. We also stock longer JST-SH to JST-SH cables if you want to position your IR Receiver Stick further away from your project.

Features

  • Vishay VSOP38338 Remote Receiver Module (Datasheet)
    • Input voltage: 2.5 V – 5.5 V
    • Current (max): 3mA
  • Pinout:
    • '+': Power In (5.5 V max)
    • 'OUT': Data
    • '-': Ground
  • Aye Arr MicroPython library
  • Schematic

Notes

  • The sensor on the IR Stick is downwards facing (the hole on the underside of the breakout)
  • The remote has a see-through protective film on top of the buttons that can be removed, if you wish.
  • The remote comes with a clear plastic tab at the bottom to prevent the battery from draining whilst in transit. Remove this to power the remote up.
  • The 'Tales of the Space Age' demo is powered by Tiny FX, so we were able to plug the IR receiver straight in with the included cable. Hoorah!
  • The Skully (Wireless Plasma Kit) demo uses Plasma 2350 W as the controller, which doesn't have a 3-pin sensor connector. We connected the IR receiver via a custom 4-pin to 3-pin JST-SH cable into the Qw/ST port (note that it’s not I2C, so the data pin used can’t be shared). Alternatively, you could connect it by soldering wires to the unpopulated headers.
